AV-over-IP

Approach to distributing audio and video signals using standard IP network infrastructure instead of traditional point-to-point cabling or proprietary matrix systems.

Common protocols:

  • SDVoE: Zero-latency 4K60 4:4:4 over 10GbE
  • Dante AV: Audio + video from Audinate
  • NDI: Software-based, compressed or full bandwidth
  • NVX (Crestron): 4K60 4:4:4 over 1GbE (proprietary)
  • NAV (Extron): 4K60 over 1GbE (proprietary)

Key points:

  • Replaces traditional matrix switchers with network switches
  • Scales easily — add endpoints without replacing infrastructure
  • Requires proper network design (VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping)
  • Latency varies by protocol: SDVoE < 1 frame, NDI|HX ~2-4 frames
